In the Constituency
Claire regulary visits schools throughout the Devizes Constituency. The visits are a good opportunity for students to learn about what it is like to work within politics and helps them to understand democracy. Please email:firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like Claire to visit your school.
Every year MPs welcome hundreds of school students to Parliament. The usual format is a coach trip, arriving in London during the morning for a free walking tour of the Palace of Westminster. During their visit to the Palace of Westminster, students learn about the characteristics of each of the three parts of Parliament – the Commons, the Lords and the Monarch – and discuss the difference between Parliament and government. They also find out about the process of passing a bill through Parliament, and have the chance to learn more about how Parliament works.
Claire always tries to meet school visitors from the Devizes Constituency to talk about the politics and history of Westminster, the work of an MP and about local issues.
The Education Service runs a ‘Visit Parliament’ programme, designed for students aged 7 to 18 which includes an education tour followed by a workshop run by Education Service staff. There is some financial support available for trips from the Parliamentary Education Service who do a fantastic job at organising the visits. To arrange a tour please contact them at: http://www.parliament.uk/education/ All bookings are made by phone, one school term in advance so please remember that you will need to contact them well in advance. For more information have a look at their website or contact the Education Service directly on 020 7219 4496 to organise a tour.
Visits to London can also take in nearby London sights such as Tate Britain, the National Gallery or the London Eye before heading home.
